What Atlassian Rovo does
Atlassian Rovo combines permission-aware enterprise search, contextual chat, configurable agents, and Rovo Studio workflows powered by the Teamwork Graph.
Rovo is Atlassian's AI layer for knowledge and action. Search spans Jira, Confluence, and configured services; Chat explains, summarizes, generates, visualizes, and can take supported actions; Agents specialize in repeatable work; and Rovo Studio lets teams create agents, automations, and apps. Its value depends on the Teamwork Graph and source permissions being accurate rather than on a generic model alone.
Rovo is included in eligible Standard, Premium, and Enterprise Cloud plans for Jira, Confluence, Jira Service Management, and selected collections. Atlassian now measures advanced activity in pooled monthly Rovo credits. Current allowances and per-request costs vary by plan and feature—for example, Agents, Quick Answer, Deep Research, Think Deeper, and graph API calls consume different amounts—and unused credits do not roll over. Atlassian says it will give notice before enforcing over-limit billing and requires explicit opt-in for extra charges.
Atlassian says connected-source permissions are synchronized so users see content they could already access, but indexing an entire workspace can expose long-standing oversharing. Chat and agent inputs and outputs are retained for a documented safety period, and dynamic model routing can involve Atlassian-hosted and zero-retention third-party providers. Review connector scope, public links, inherited permissions, retention, data-contribution settings, marketplace agents, and Guard capabilities before enabling broad access.
Permission-aware does not mean factually reliable. Rovo can retrieve obsolete pages, merge contradictory tickets, produce incomplete citations, or execute an inappropriate but technically permitted action. Atlassian warns that generated responses are probabilistic. Users should inspect cited records, agents should have narrow tools, automation should be separately constrained, and consequential writes should retain confirmation and rollback paths.
How Atlassian Rovo works
Rovo indexes permitted Atlassian and connected third-party content into the Teamwork Graph while synchronizing source permissions. Search retrieves personalized results; Chat and Deep Research combine relevant records, user prompts, and selected web or file context with routed language models to generate answers and citations. Agents receive objectives, knowledge, tools, and skills, then propose or execute allowed Jira, Confluence, calendar, messaging, or connected actions. Interactive consequential tools typically request user confirmation, while administrators govern AI activation, connectors, credits, agents, and policies.
How to set up Atlassian Rovo
Audit knowledge and permissions
Identify authoritative spaces, stale content, public links, broad groups, sensitive projects, data owners, retention rules, and connected apps before indexing.
Confirm eligibility and credits
Verify each Cloud plan, seat count, monthly pooled allowance, feature credit rate, beta status, expected usage, over-limit policy, and Rovo Dev separation.
Activate AI deliberately
Use the organization controls to enable eligible sites, select connectors and blocklists, review data contribution and model routing, and assign admin ownership.
Pilot Search and Chat first
Test identities with different permissions, source freshness, citations, conflicting records, sensitive queries, Deep Research, web access, files, and deletion propagation.
Build least-privilege agents
Give each agent a narrow objective, trusted knowledge, limited tools, clear instructions, confirmation for writes, error handling, audit ownership, and representative evaluations.
Monitor use and outcomes
Review credits, connector scope, agent actions, failed or unsafe answers, permission changes, source quality, user corrections, and business impact before expanding.
Atlassian Rovo FAQs
Is Rovo sold separately?
Core Rovo capabilities are included with eligible paid Atlassian Cloud subscriptions. Rovo Dev has separate developer-seat and credit pricing.
What are Rovo credits?
They are pooled monthly usage units for advanced Rovo features. Allowances and request costs vary by plan and capability, reset monthly, and do not roll over.
Does Rovo respect source permissions?
Atlassian says Rovo synchronizes permissions from Atlassian and connected apps. Admins still need to fix overshared source content and audit connector scope.
Do model providers train on Rovo prompts?
Atlassian says third-party hosted model providers do not retain inputs and outputs or use them to train their services; review current model routing and data-contribution settings.
Can Rovo Agents change Jira or Confluence?
With the user's permissions and configured tools, agents can perform supported actions. Consequential interactive tools generally request confirmation; automation behavior needs separate testing.
Was Rovo tested hands-on for this listing?
