How OpenRouter works

A client calls an OpenAI-compatible OpenRouter endpoint with a model ID, credentials, and optional provider routing policy. OpenRouter selects an eligible provider by availability, price, latency, throughput, order, parameter support, privacy policy, ZDR, region, or other configured rules and can fall back when an attempt fails. It returns the model output plus usage, cost, provider, and routing metadata. BYOK can use customer provider keys under separate limits. OpenRouter does not store prompt and response content by default, but optional input/output logging and data-use settings change handling, and downstream providers retain their own policies. A stable model label can still route through implementations with meaningful behavioral differences.
